3 Resolutions that Will Propel Your Career
New year, new you!
As we approach the end of 2022 and prepare for 2023, consider resolutions that will help you propel your career. Today, I'm sharing with you 3 tips that I tell mentees to prepare them for 'Day One' with a new company or role. Turn these steps into resolutions to help your career take the direction you want.
3 Resolutions to propel your career
1. Reinvent and build a path for your vision.
Start by asking yourself "What is the vision for your dream role?". Even if you recently started a new position, you should always be looking for your next job. Sounds harsh but in reality, you always need to be working forward.
Identify the attributes or skills that you need to develop or conversely, change and reinvent. Do a simple Start, Stop, and Continue exercise.
- What do you need to start doing to gather the skills necessary to move toward your goal?
- What do you need to stop doing? This is a great opportunity to get rid of ineffective habits you tried at previous roles.
- What are the things you need to continue doing? These are the skills you’ve been recognized for in the past. Focus on leveraging your strengths and managing your weaknesses.
2. Know yourself well.
Spend some time understanding what makes you tick during usual behavior and stressful situations. An easy and free way to get a quick snapshot is the Myers-Briggs Personality Type. I’d highly recommend this if you have never done it.
There is a simple 10-15 minute test using the same personality type methodology called “16Personalities”. Click on it and check it out. It’s FREE!
The most important part of knowing yourself is having a personal action plan on how to deal with it. For example, if you're an introvert working with extroverts, or if you’re an engineer or producer and asked to work with on-camera talent, there are going to be moments of tension and friction. It’s important to know what makes you tick and how to identify and deal with stress before you exhibit your stress behavior.
3. Have fun and enjoy the ride!
Look, life is a journey and you need to enjoy the ride. The opportunity to reinvent yourself may only come 2-3 times in an entire career. It's a special time worthy of pause and celebratory reflection.
You need to embrace every role in your career because they will all teach you something about yourself and the industry. Take advantage of the opportunities for change and set the tone for the amazing opportunities ahead of you.
You have very few moments to reinvent yourself in a 40-year career and a new year is a very special opportunity for reinvention.
