5 Ways to Leverage Your Social Media EQ
Emotional Intelligence or Emotional Quotient (EQ) is a psychological term used to explain how well a person can relate to others and live an inner peaceful life. This allows the individual to thrive in all their goals and relationships by avoiding any emotional blockers or triggers. Similar to our personal relationships, we have to carry our EQ into our social media feed and connections.
Never before has “social media EQ'' been so important for multimedia talent. A couple years ago, social media EQ might have been a couple of proofreads to check on neutrality and objectivity. Now we have many things to consider and here are 5 ways to leverage your social media EQ as talent:
Establish trust.
Establish trust or create engagement with your followers, reply to comments and messages from viewers, agencies, fellow journalists alike.
Build an audience on every network.
Engagement creates connections with your audience. Quality over quantity is relevant when it comes to followers. Once you have an important goal such as finding your next career move or fundraising for a cause, engaged followers will show their true value.
Avoid polarizing subjects.
Staying away from piling on to polarizing topics such as political affiliations takes tremendous discipline. Just the perception that we lean one way or another can start to divide, or worse, shrink our audience.A great journalist delivers the news to their community without implementing ideas.
Be careful with your grammar and emojis.
A young journalist entered a newsy post regarding the 2017 immigration executive order and travel ban. Something as simple as a single exclamation point turned a newsworthy story into an opinion. These additions are great in social media copy but can take the seriousness away from a serious article or post.
Know your network effect.
This is a math exercise where:
Your followers
X The audience of your followers
X Their followers (must subtract the overlap of course)
= Your total audience reach.
What happens when you loose follower #2 along your audience chain, in effect losing their entire reach of 9k?
There are several ways to leverage social media EQ to transform your brand. In marketing terms, if you’re creating publicity for yourself as talent for hire, YOU are the brand. In the end, it's all a choice. As a coach and mentor, I’m hopeful the choice would be to gain a large and highly engaged audience. To me, the path to do that is fairly clear… exposure.
