Between Jan 2020 & Nov 2023, 12,000 People Have Left TV Broadcasting
Between Jan 2020 & Nov 2023, 12,000 people have left television broadcasting* Some left for different/better career opportunities. Others made the decision for; work/life balance, salary & income potential, exhaustion.
Many however had no choice. Consolidation, downsizing, layoffs, RIF, etc. The term "pay, no play" has become commonplace in HR circles. It can feel like a gut punch but in reality, it can be an amazing opportunity. I know this from personal experience. I've been 'involuntarily terminated' more than once in my career.
Today is my 62nd birthday and birthdays always lead to a bit of reflection. If I could pinpoint the most important attributes that led to my successes, both personally and professionally, it was the ability to get off the mat when I got knocked down. These three attributes are key .....
1. Optimism. You can't look at worst case scenario. It makes you anxious and creates doubt. It puts a frame around what is so you never see what can be. This is a great opportunity to replace your income in a role that you will love.
2. Faith. You need to believe in yourself. Your transition has nothing to do with your ability, value, self-worth. Take what you've learned and continue to build off of it. What makes our career so special is the compounding of experiences.
3. Grit. Life gets gritty at times and you are going to have to embrace the suck. For me, having built a timeless career toolkit, I have the confidence to take on impending and unforeseen challenges. You can't go down and stay down, you must have the grit and strength to fight for the bounce back.
None of us have any idea what the next 6 hours, 6 days, 6 months, or 6 years has in store for us but we will be faced with adversity. We will "lay me down and bleed awhile". That you can count on and why I find today's inspiration from an unknown British poet's poem so relevant.
