Comparison is the thief of Joy
"Comparison Is the thief of Joy" Social Media is likely becoming a killer in your media career. The constant comparisons and way we react is not only the thief of joy in our lives but it's destroying your professional brand equity.
It's happening in two ways:
1) The architecture of our personal brand is the convergence of our passions/skills, our target audience/clients, and our .... differentiators/value proposition. The essence of branding is how we differentiate, not emulate. How many dancing Meteorologists does the world need?
2) We begin to focus on our 'perceived' weaknesses instead of leveraging our strengths. Our strengths become less differentiated and we move closer to average. Average, by definition, is the best of the worst and the worst of the best. Don't know about you but I aspire to be neither of those.
Today's challenge for my clients is not how they are chasing someone else's likes, retweets, and followers. It's how they are carving out their own.
Go put joy back in your life and double down on leveraging your strengths and celebrate what makes you different. By all means, if you have pre-teen and teen children, celebrate their uniqueness and thought leadership.
Our mission is not to create a new generation of influencers and Tik Tok stars where joy is measured by the numbers of views, likes, shares, and comparisons. Joy is measured by our individual differences and instilling the values that drive a lifetime of happiness and healthy relationships, regardless of what the latest viral video espouses.
