Success is in a journey, not in a destination!
Success is in a journey, not in a destination. When you look back at your personal and professional life it's not the days or material things you'll remember. It will be moments that were part of your journey.
How obsessed do you become, so focused on your dream job, that you ignore additional opportunities along the way? We forget that it's our career toolbox that enables us to get to our dream job and the tools in the box are acquired in that journey.
Journeys are never a straight line. There will be twists, turns, speed bumps and even dead ends. This week a young journalist who experienced one of those dead ends reached out to me. They were distraught, devastated.
Whatever it may be called; RIF, layoff, downsize, or position elimination, you are likely to face that fire at least once in your career. It hurts. We take it personally because our identity and value can become defined by our job or career status as perceived by others. It's actually the furthest from the truth.
Think about it for a moment. Your capabilities and career runway are exactly the same as was five minutes before that challenging news was delivered to you that you are being let go. That is not the time to lose faith in yourself because someone didn't recognize your value. The size of your faith will determine the size of your capabilities. Keep the Faith!
Next, this is not a door closing, it's a door that just opened up to opportunities where you are going to acquire more tools, different and complimentary, to put in your career toolbox. If played right, this doesn't detract from your skills, competencies, and professional value, it enhances them!
You should keep your eye on that dream job and destination, it's critical to have goals, but in the end you'll be remembered for your journey and how you traveled.
